Welcome to Mark Gilliland's gateway homepage. I am a visual artist with extensive experience in a range of professions including: technical development manager, online product manager, graphic designer, web designer, sustainability activist and landscape designer.

On-Line Product Development
With more than 20 years of industry experience, my expertise lies in pulling the disparate aspects of a project - technology, creative, and business - into a unified coherent whole. I have focused my career on early-stage product development and design as well as on editorial systems and operational issues surrounding on-line content and interactive services. I have successfully developed technical, production and creative processes that work, creating order out of chaos through thoughtful analysis and understanding of software and system constraints, business goals and staff needs.

Graphic and Web Design
I have served both management and creative roles providing expertise in graphic design, web design, information architecture, taxonomy, user modeling, content production workflow and content re-use / re-purposing. Beyond my creative eye for design and layout, I have extensive hands-on experience with web, print and video production processes, workflows and content management tools and systems.

Sustainability & Landscape Design
In 2004, I received my Landscape Design Certification from the NY Botanical Gardens and became a Cornell Master Gardener in 2006. My interest is in environmental conservation with an emphasis on sustainability and stormwater management (including best practices such as rain gardens, vegetative swales and riparian buffers). As I have a strong hands-on horticultural background, I choose "the right plant for the right place" with a strong mix of native plants, thus helping to restore habitat. I am available to provide residential or commercial landscape design services, horticultural consulting, municipal street tree inventory management and consultation on urban forest tree preservation including creation of associated municipal legislation. I also write articles for local and regional newpapers, give public talks and teach about various gardening and landscape design topics.
